After being jailed and loosing everything he cherished in life, the Count of Monte Cristo has nothing to loose anymore. So he releases himself from all the social conventions he used to respect. he is no longer "deterred by any of the scruples or obstacles" of living in a community. In that sense, he considers himself free to play out his revenge without mercy.
