How is big government and higher taxes supposed to....?

...create success, prosperity, and the pursuit of happiness ? Isn't the idea to have smaller government, lower taxes, and allow The People the freedom to live their lives without government intrusion and manipulation ? How could relinquishing our freedom ever lead to a positive outcome ?
