Saving dvds to Harddrive & watch?

I want to save my block buster movies to my computer. & watch them on my computer later. is there a free software that is too good to be true. AVI. tryed dvd fab and it isent free not all that great. come people . help me so I can be happy. I spent hours hours & hours & I dont wanna spend the money on a a software. I hooked my computer to my tv so I can watch the movies off my hard drive. any ADvice ???????????????
