What is a precipitate in chemistry?

Well i have to do a chem lab final and i used pre-made solutions in cl. i dont know what the precipitate is. i mixed my unknown with a chloride and all i know is it wasnt a chloride. it was a sulfate or an oxide. so what is the precipitate?
